Dine-In At Dooky Chase
Business at Dooky Chase Restaurant (2301 Orleans Ave., 821-0535) is getting closer to normal with the return of dine-in lunch service. The landmark Creole restaurant in the Seventh Ward was heavily damaged by the levee failures after Hurricane Katrina and has been gradually rebuilding. An à la carte menu is offered Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and a buffet is served on Fridays for $17.95. Takeout service continues Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Owned by chef and author Leah Chase, the restaurant has been in business since 1941 and gained a reputation as an important local meeting spot during the civil rights movement. The restaurant remains a regular stop for visiting political figures, and both President George W. Bush and President-elect Barack Obama have eaten in its dining room.
Cocktail Dot Com
Ti Adelaide Martin and Lally Brennan, proprietors of Commander's Palace (1403 Washington Ave., 899-8221; www.commanderspalace.com) and Café Adelaide (300 Poydras St., 595-3305; www.cafeadelaide.com), have launched a Web site called inthelandofcocktails.com, promoting cocktail culture and eating and drinking around New Orleans. The two restaurateurs are cousins and co-authors of the cocktail recipe book In the Land of Cocktails, published last year. The new Web site includes a blog, recipes and online videos of cocktail-centric tours, interviews with chefs and bartenders, and similar features. A retail section sells barware and copies of In the Land of Cocktails. Later the site will include cooking demonstrations and cocktail pairing advice from Commander's Palace executive chef Tory McPhail.
Moon Over Lakeview
People who remember Charlie's Deli and its distinctive "moon" sandwich should feel right at home at Dan's Place (515 Harrison Ave., 482-2838). It's the latest restaurant to open in the space that was home to Charlie's for many years before the levee failures, and it, too, has a menu of po-boys, plate lunches and specialty sandwiches. A rendition of the moon sandwich is a delicious mess of roast beef, ham, cheese, Russian dressing and coleslaw all more or less contained on a muffuletta loaf. Dan's Place serves breakfast and lunch Monday through Saturday.
