Baquets are Back
The reopening of Li'l Dizzy's (1500 Esplanade Ave., 569-8997) signals the return of one of New Orleans' great restaurant families: the Baquets. The family's restaurant legacy began in the 1940s with the opening of a fried chicken joint off Canal Street called Paul Gross Chicken Coop. By 1966, co-proprietor Eddie Baquet opened his own place, called Eddie's, on Law Street, which grew into a culinary legend of international fame before closing in the 1990s. The family operated many other casual Creole restaurants in the city until what seemed to be the last, Zachary's on Oak Street, closed in 2004. But proprietor Wayne Baquet emerged from a very short retirement a few months later to open Li'l Dizzy's in the Trem. With storm damage repaired, Baquet and Li'l Dizzy's are back in action, serving breakfast and a lunchtime buffet of fried chicken, gumbo and similar down-home fare Monday through Saturday.
A week before St. Joseph's Day, the local chapter of Slow Food USA (www.slowfoodneworleans.com) will host its "Cookies for a Cause" Italian cookie baking day as a fundraiser benefiting the return of the century-old Angelo Brocato Ice Cream and Confectionary (214 N. Carrollton Ave., 488-1465; www.angelobrocatoicecream.com). The public is invited to join Slow Food members in the demonstration kitchen of the Savvy Gourmet (4519 Magazine St., 895-2665; www.savvygourmet.com) on March 12 beginning at 4 p.m. to learn about and bake Italian cookies traditionally used in St. Joseph's altars.
will sell the finished products to members of its organization across the country with proceeds going to its Terra Madre Relief Fund for hurricane recovery, of which Brocato's is one of the beneficiaries. The Brocato family is rebuilding its flooded bakery and gelateria in Mid-City and plans to reopen later this year. Whole Foods Market is donating 3 perent of total sales each Wednesday from its Uptown Arabella Station store (5600 Magazine St., 899-9119; www.wholefoods.com) to local nonprofits involved in the region's recovery. The store will direct its contribution to a different organization on each Wednesday over eight weeks in March and April. The first beneficiary was the business recovery group Desire NOLA (www.desirenola.org), and this week's is Restore or Retreat (www.restoreorretreat.org), a Thibodaux-based coastal advocacy group. Future recipients are Rebuilding Together on March 15, the Idea Village on March 22, the Gulf Coast Fisherman Relief Fund on March 29, Rebuilding Hope in New Orleans on April 5, Common Ground on April 12 and Operation Helping Hands on April 19. Whole Foods' Arabella Station is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
