The New Orleans Food Co-op (NOFC), which plans to open its supermarket on St. Claude Avenue in early 2011, will receive $375,000 appropriated from House Bill 2, signed by Gov. Bobby Jindal earlier this month.
NOFC operates inside the New Orleans Healing Center at St. Claude and St. Roch avenues in the former Universal Furniture building, home to a gallery space and the New Orleans Police Department's 5th District substation. Next to the current space, NOFC plans to open a 6,000-square-foot grocery store that will offer healthy, affordable and locally produced goods. The co-op runs a small-scale weekly market from the center (see "Co-Workers," Dec. 29, 2009), where members can buy bulk goods, local produce and other items.
