Chris Owens Club -- 500 Bourbon St., 523-6400 -- Chris has been a New Orleans institution for years, and you'll see why as she struts her stuff in front of a Latin band. Live music nightly; dance music late-night. Opens at 8 nightly. (S-3)

Crescent City Brewhouse -- 527 Decatur St., 522-0571 -- This spacious restaurant and brewpub always has several original beers on tap, and is home to a snazzy jazz combo and scenic balcony. Live music nightly. Open 11-10 Sun-Thu, Fri-Sat 11-midnight; bar open later. (S-4)

Donna's Bar & Grill -- 800 Rampart St., 596-6914 -- The undisputed home of the area's finest brass bands. Donna's has an old-school New Orleans jukebox, and is so small you have to walk through the band to get to the bathroom. Live music Wed-Mon. Opens at 8:30 p.m. Thu-Mon. (T-2)

Funky Butt -- 714 N. Rampart St., 558-0872 -- This dim, intimate atmosphere sets the tone for an old-school jazz club. Big names frequently play here, and it draws a wildly diverse crowd. Live music nightly. Opens at 9 p.m. daily. (T-2)

Funky Pirate -- 727 Bourbon St., 523-1960 -- The 1799-era building is a Caribbean pirate's paradise, with strong drinks and loud blues bands. Live music nightly. Open 5-2 a.m. Mon-Thu, noon-3 a.m. Fri-Sun. (T-3)

House of Blues -- 225 Decatur St., 529-BLUE (2583) -- Voted 'Best Live Music Venue' in the 2000 Gambit Weekly Readers' Poll-- Yeah, it's a franchise. But this one is New Orleans-centric enough (the food, the folk art, the always-impressive musical lineup) to make us forget. Live music nightly. Kerry Irish Pub -- 331 Decatur St., 527-5954 -- Guinness, anyone? This comfortable bar offers live Irish and alternative folk music nightly. Opens at 2 daily. (S-4)

Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop -- 941 Bourbon St., 523-0066 -- The oldest bar in the city. Ernest Hemingway would have hung out in this musky cave featuring world-class Bloody Marys and acoustic musicians. Live music regularly. Opens at noon daily. (T-3)

Le Bon Temps Roulé -- 4801 Magazine St., 895-8117 -- A favorite all-around place to see live bands, drink local brews and grab a burger. There's free oysters on Fridays, never a cover, and a truly rockin' jukebox. Live music Wed-Sat. Opens at 11 daily. (F-6)

Maison Bourbon -- 641 Bourbon St. -- Jamil Sharif performs traditional New Orleans Jazz beginning 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Monday and Thursday. (T-3)

Maple Leaf Bar -- 8316 Oak St., Riverbend, 866-LEAF (5323) -- A cramped, out-of-the-way mecca with tons of personality and a loyal crowd. Tuesday-night Rebirth Brass Band shows are a guaranteed good time. Live music nightly. Opens at 3 daily. (E-5)

Mermaid Lounge -- 1100 Constance St., 524-4747 -- Party with a casual, alternative (read: freaks) crowd in this hard-to-find local favorite. It boasts great mermaid art and new bands you won't find anyplace else: rockabilly, alternative, funk and more. Performances and hours vary; call for details. (Q-5)

Mid-City Lanes Rock'n'Bowl -- 4133 S. Carrollton Ave., 482-3133 -- This laid-back, friendly bowling alley is one of the favored places in town to catch the best in zydeco, blues, roots rock and more. Pete Fountain's Jazz Club -- 2 Poydras St. (Hilton Riverside Hotel), 523-4374 -- The legendary clarinet virtuoso performs New Orleans music the way it's meant to sound. Reservations recommended; club accepts only AmEx. Fountain and his band play 10 p.m. shows every Tue, Fri and Sat. (R-5)

Preservation Hall -- 726 St. Peter St., 522-2841 -- Jazz institution extraordinaire, featuring the city's finest Dixieland and traditional New Orleans-style jazz performances. Live music nightly. Open 8-midnight nightly. (T-3)

Red Room -- 2040 St. Charles Ave., 528-9759 -- *Voted 'Best Cosmopolitan' in the 2000 Gambit Weekly Readers' Poll* -- A classy supper club that features swing, jazz, dance music and eclectic performers, and draws big crowds of all ages depending upon the show. Shim Sham Club -- 615 Toulouse St., 565-5400 -- It features diverse musical acts, but the emphasis is on jazz, as evidenced by a jukebox that displays an appreciation for older standards. A hip newcomer that's here to stay. Music nightly. Open 2-6 a.m. daily. (T-3)

Snug Harbor -- 626 Frenchman St., 949-0696 -- Its ultra-intimate setting is perfect for jazz shows, and Snug Harbor presents some of the best. Live music nightly. Opens at 5 nightly; showtimes at 9 & 11. (V-4)

Steamboat Natchez -- Docks at Jackson Brewery, 586-8777 -- Jazz cruises 11:30 and 2:30 daily; 7 p.m. nightly. (T-4)

Storyville District -- 125 Bourbon St., 410-1000 -- This joint venture between the Ralph Brennan restaurant family and Jazz Fest producer Quint Davis brings top-flight New Orleans musicians back to Bourbon Street. Live music nightly. Open 5-11 daily for food, 5-midnight daily for music. (R-3)

Sweet Kathleen's Dixieland Jazz Club -- 308 Decautr, 311 N. Peters, next to Bienville House Hotel, 568-0080 -- Traditional jazz nightly at 8 p.m. Closed Wednesdays. (S-4)

Sweet Lorraine's -- 1931 St. Claude Ave., 945-9654 -- Surely Louis Armstrong is looking down at this juke joint and smiling. It's authentic, egalitarian and just plain smokin'. Open Wed-Sun; live music Thu-Sun. Thu-Sat shows start at 10 and midnight; Sun has an early show from 7-11. (W-3)

Treasure Chest Casino -- 443-8000 -- Its "Treasure Fest" concert series features notable local and national acts. Call for details.

Tropical Isle -- 738 Toulouse St., 525-1689; 721 Bourbon St., 529-4109 -- A can't-miss stop during a French Quarter bar crawl, due to its knockout drinks and bands who play fun party songs.
