Ernie K-Doe Blast

comment
Like that other exemplar of rock 'n' roll royalty, Elvis Presley, Emperor of the Universe Ernie K-Doe's star only continues to sparkle more brightly since his exit from this plane in 2001. (And unlike the King, sightings of the Emperor can be easily confirmed -- his life-sized wax effigy still presides at the Mother-In-Law Lounge most evenings.) This annual celebration of K-Doe's curious life (pictured with Antoinette K-Doe), on the anniversary of his death, benefits the Renew Our Music Fund (formerly the New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund), one of the groups that donated money and time toward renovating the Treme institution after it took on five feet of water post-Katrina. Subjects paying tribute to the fallen emperor will hear an all-star tribute band led by Rockie Charles featuring guest vocalist MC Trachiotomy, one of the local artists who put time into rebuilding the bar. Also performing are the New Orleans Bingo! Show, the Rebirth Brass Band and DJ Jubilee. Two pairs of Ernie's shoes will be up for silent auction during the event. Official signed Ernie K-Doe posters, normally sold for $100, will be available for a special two-hour period for $25 each. The famous K-Doe statue will also be available for photos for $5 each, for which fans will get a glossy 8x10 print to take home that day. And of course, Antoinette K-Doe's famous red beans and rice will be served for a dollar a bowl. All guests receive a free Ernie K-Doe $100 bill at the door. Advance tickets are available at the ROM offices at 1201 St. Philip St, or by calling 596-6496. Tickets $15 in advance, $20 at the door. -- Alison Fensterstock
