Crescent City Craft Market

comment
Over the past decade or so, the will to craft has been sweeping through contemporary feminism like wildfire " or at least the flame from many, many hand-dipped candles. In part, it's a reclamation of domesticity and a subversion of traditional 'women's work." The surge in hipster craft aficionados has given us fuzzy, friendly items like hand-knit vibrator cozies, needlepoint samplers that say 'Go Away" and homemade fruit bowls made of melted vinyl records, all coming from the clever fingers of radical crafters. Following the example of cities like Austin and Portland, a group of like-minded crafters united to form the New Orleans Craft Mafia, to band together and promote and sell their work. Just in time for holiday shopping mania, the capos and soldiers of the group make an offer you can't refuse: dozens of local artisans all under a single roof, peddling their cool, quirky, one-of-a-kind wares including jewelry, T-shirts, magnets, accessories, knitwear and more. DJ Lingerie spins records. The bar will be open. Free admission. — Alison Fensterstock
