One of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation's annual neighborhood festivals, the Congo Square Rhythms Festival celebrates the roots of New Orleans music. When Louisiana was a French colony, slaves were allowed to congregate in Congo Square to make their own music, dance and practice their own religion and customs. The festival lineup includes a performance by the Fatien Ensemble, including Dr. Michael White, Ivory Coast percussionist Seguenon Kone (pictured), Bruce "Sunpie" Barnes, Margie Perez and Jason Marsalis. Other performers include Bamboula 2000, Kumbuka African Dance Company, Moyuba and Tekrema Dance Theater. There also are food vendors and a craft fair. Free admission. — Will Coviello
