- These lamps by Fifi Laughlin are for sale at The Atelier-Magasin Artists' Collective.
A new artists' collective recently opened its doors on Magazine Street. Like most art, it evolved organically from a series of happy coincidences.
"I had just rented the space from (collective member) Kathy Slater, but I didn't have the time to staff it. So I said, 'Let's share it'" lamp designer Fifi Laughlin says. "So we called a few more people."
The Atelier-Magasin Artists' Collective (3954 Magazine St., www.amcollective.homestead.com) is composed of six artists — Laughlin, Slater, Clay Judice Jr., George Marks, Julie Silvers and Guy Martin Wenzel — whose tools range from charcoal to chainsaws.
"We are a motley crew: a sculptor, a lamp maker, a designer, an architect, a couple of mixed-media artists and myself, a portrait artist,"Judice says.
Though the group of artists is diverse, all share a common goal: to nurture Louisiana artists while promoting their work on a national level. "Let's keep Louisiana artists living and working in Louisiana," Laughlin says.
The collective is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
