Drive, bike or walk down Carrollton Avenue — south or north, it doesn't matter — and count the number of grocery stores you find. You'll run into Rouse's on the far north side and a Robert Fresh Market on the far south side, off Claiborne Avenue. In between: gas stations, convenience stores, pharmacies and fast food restaurants. Food folks call it a food desert. For fresh, local and wholesome foods, there is Hollygrove Market and Farm just off the avenue, and coming soon is Jack and Jake's, which will be housed in a converted warehouse space at 8300 Earhart Blvd. Designed by a team with students from Loyola and Tulane universities and the University of New Orleans, the market aims to go "beyond organic" with an inventory of local, seasonal items from within a 100-mile radius of the city. The market plans to open in May. Visit www.jackandjakes.com for more information.
