Paula LaCour,

vice president of the Down Syndrome Association of Greater New Orleans, received the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation Angel Award Dec. 8 for her volunteer efforts with the organization. Blue Cross and Blue Shield also awarded the group $20,000 to benefit its outreach programs. The group, which raises awareness of Down syndrome, celebrated its 20th anniversary in December.

awarded a $5,000 grant to the New Orleans Women's Shelter in December as part of its Help the Homeless grant program. The inaugural program donated $100,000 to 16 organizations nationwide. The New Orleans Women's Shelter provides transitional housing, counseling and family support to women and children.

Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School's Beta Club

in Slidell raised $7,000 for cancer research during a 213-mile hike through Slidell in November. The Beta Club, which initially planned to raise $2,500, presented a check to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Dec. 20. The Houston-based cancer center treated more than 115,000 people in 2012.

Academy Sports and Outdoors

and several anonymous donors gave 400 basketballs and footballs to students at KIPP Central City Academy on Dec. 19 at an event coordinated by the New Orleans Police Department. The school opened in 2007 and teaches children in fifth through eighth grades.
