They get what they deserve


Skip Bolen

was awarded the 2013 Jazz Photo of the Year at the Jazz Journalists Association Awards for Journalism and Media on June 19. The award recognized Bolen's photo of jazz trumpeter Lionel Ferbos from the 2012 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Bolen is a Lafayette native and known for his black-and-white images of New Orleans jazz artists.


Juliette Ioup,

a University of New Orleans physics professor, received the 2013 Rossing Prize in Acoustics Education from the Acoustical Society of America, which recognized her work to help musicians understand how sound waves work. The prize, which honors people who contribute to acoustics education, includes a $4,000 cash award.


Purina Cat Chow

delivered a $1,000 care package to Animal Rescue New Orleans on June 25 as part of the company's "50 Years. 50 Shelters." campaign. The company also donated $1,977 to the shelter, based on results of an online voting campaign. "50 Years. 50 Shelters." supported 50 cat-focused shelters nationwide and provided $225,000 in cat products and monetary donations.


Richard Molenaar III

pleaded guilty June 19 in U.S. District Court to conspiracy to commit bribery for using his companies to bid on maintenance jobs at the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, where Molenaar and Director of Purchasing John Sens rigged the bidding process in Molenaar's favor. In exchange, Molenaar gave Sens $30,000 in cash, among other things. Molenaar faces up to five years in prison and a $25,000 fine.
