Mardi Gras is over, Lent is here and so is your weekend sports update.

I’ve added a “Prediction – Who wins?” under each category. I’ll have this every week, so readers can predict and compare and contrast your picks this weekend vs mine in the comments section. It’s fun to try to predict the future, so play along with me.

New Orleans Saints

Does football season ever truly end? The NFL’s free agency period begins Tuesday, March 11. So, the Saints will be busy this weekend organizing their to do list of who they’d love to sign and who they can actually afford. Speaking of who the Who Dats can afford - some of that talk began yesterday when Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the Saints are shopping Pierre Thomas and possibly Darren Sproles. Also, Mr. Touchdown Dance himself, Lance Moore, looks like he’s on his way out too with this tweet from this morning:

Prediction – Who wins? The Saints win. General Manger Mickey Loomis, much like last year when he signed Keenan Lewis, will make a few moves to free up cap room and sign one of the top defensive backs – probably a safety this year.

New Orleans Pelicans (24-37)

The Pelicans came back from their annual Mardi Gras road trip with a busted wing as they finished the trip 1-4. Their lone win on the west coast was a 132-125 victory vs the Lakers. Good news in that win is 132 is the most points the Pels have scored all year. The bad news is the 125 points is the most they have given up all year. A win is a win and this weekend, we can enjoy All Star Anthony Davis at home in the Smoothie King Center.

Friday March 7 vs Milwaukee 7 pm (FSNO)
Sunday March 9 vs Denver 5 pm (FSNO)

Prediction - Who wins? Pelicans go 2-0 this weekend and go into next week on a 2 game winning streak.

New Orleans Zephyrs

The Zephyrs, the AAA affiliate of Major League Baseball’s Miami Marlins, are currently in spring training preparing for the 2014 season. Their first batch of pre-season games actually starts March 13 in Jupiter, Fla. With that, the Z’s will also play in an improved Zephyr Stadium during the regular season

Prediction – Who wins? We all win when baseball season starts. Go Z’s.

LSU Baseball (11-2)

The Tigers took one on the chin last Sunday losing to Yale 8-7. The win comes as a surprise since LSU won Friday and Saturday’s games by a combined score of 22-0. They’re in the midst of playing 5 straight games due to the poor weather all this week. This weekend the Tigers battle the Big 10 conference when taking on the Purdue Boilermakers in Alex Box Stadium.

Friday March 7 - vs Purdue 7 pm
Saturday March 8 - vs Purdue 6:30 pm
Sunday March 9 - vs Purdue 1 pm

Prediction - Who wins? Get the brooms out because the Tigers sweep Purdue.

LSU Football

LSU Spring practice begins Saturday in Baton Rouge. The Tigers have a lot of questions to fill and Spring practice will help get some of those answers. Who plays QB? Who starts at WR? Who takes over on the defensive line and at safety?

Prediction - Who wins? By the end of spring practice, true freshman Brandon Harris will be be full on even with Anthony Jennings for the starting QB job.

UNO Basketball (11-14)

Head coach Mark Slessinger’s Privateers dropped to (11-14) overall after a loss last night in Beaumont, Texas to Lamar. They’ll head to Huntsville, Texas Saturday to play the Bearkats of Sam Houston State.

Saturday March 8 - @ Sam Houston State 4 pm

Prediction - Who wins? UNO comes back to the big easy with a win over the Bearkats.

UNO Baseball (3-7)

Ron Maestri’s Privateers, who’ve lost 4 straight games, travel out of state for the first time in the 2014 season. The team heads to Troy, Alabama to take on the Trojans of Troy University.

Friday March 7- @ Troy 6:30 pm
Saturday March 8 - @ Troy 1 pm
Sunday March 9 - @ Troy 1 pm

Prediction - Who wins? UNO takes 2 wins from the Trojans.

Tulane Basketball (16-15)

The Green Wave finished up their regular season at home last night with a 68-51 loss to Southern Mississippi (26-5). The Greenies now move onto the Conference USA (CUSA) Championships March 11 in El Paso, Texas. Hopefully, the team can make things right next weekend and win the tournament.

Prediction - Who wins? Tulane goes 1-3 this weekend in sunny California.
