As noted in our recent review of Bear’s Po-boys at Gennaro’s, the name Bear’s is already well known around the area. That’s because a string of related but separate restaurants have long been in business on the Northshore, sharing the Bear’s po-boy name and many of the recipes. But it turns out that Bear’s Po-boys at Gennaro’s isn’t the only extension of the Bear’s brand to make it the leap across the Causeway.
Matt Dekemel recently opened his new Bear’s Po-boys at the Bottom Line (3309 Division St., Metairie,504-455-6613) inside a newly-renovated bar in Metairie on the edge of Fat City, not far from the Lakeside Shopping Center.
Dekemel was previously a part owner in the Bear’s edition at Gennaro’s, which first opened in 2010. He left that partnership and says he decided to open his own version after consulting with the Watson family, who first started the first Bear’s back on the Northshore. The Bear’s name goes back to a sno-ball stand the Watsons started in Bucktown back in 1977 and has gotten around quite a bit in the decades since.
For now, the menu at this Bear’s at the Bottom Line is a standard roster of po-boys, starting with the roast beef, though Dekemel plans to expand with other dishes as the new operation gets rolling. The Bottom Line has been a bar for many years and it still functions primarily as one. That means customers must be at least 21 to enter, though in a bid for mid-day po-boy business there’s no smoking allowed during lunch hours.
Bear’s at the Bottom Line serves from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
