Last year, the reigning institution Preservation Hall Jazz Band celebrated its golden anniversary with a triumphant burst of activity, ensuring the traditional torchbearers aren't going anywhere. Its sold-out Carnegie Hall dates capped off a year of tributes, including a tour with newcomers My Morning Jacket and the release of a commemorative box set spanning the band's career, which began in 1961 and whose veterans flesh out New Orleans music history.
With That's It! — the band's first-ever collection of original compositions, out now on Legacy Recordings — Preservation Hall proves its staying power. "The music will speak forever," says album producer and My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James in the album notes. "Will people stop listening to Beethoven? Will people stop listening to Bob Dylan? Will people stop listening to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band?”'
