The tagline for the food truck Food Drunk is “chef inspired, alcohol influenced cuisine,” so it seems fitting that the this mobile vendor’s latest regular deployment is the equivalent of keeping afternoon office hours at an Irish pub.
Food Drunk is scheduled for the foreseeable future to be outside Finn McCool’s Irish Pub in Mid-City each Tuesday, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (and extending to 5:30 p.m. beginning in July). On Wednesdays, a different vendor, the NOLA Truck, will be serving there during the same time frame.
Boo Koo BBQ remains the in-house food vendor at Finn McCool’s, operating from its tavern kitchen inside. But while Boo Koo is closed for lunch on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the pub decided to invite food trucks for regular weekly visits. Finn McCool’s co-owner Pauline Patterson says another food truck, the grilled cheese specialist Frencheeze, is scheduled to join the rotation later in the summer. She also says a two-day food truck rally is in the works at the bar over Labor Day weekend.
Food Drunk has recently been serving dishes like smoked pork with habanero salsa on pretzel rolls, crawfish and crab mac and cheese and char-grilled oysters with garlic, andouille and panko, while some NOLA Truck specialties include Vaucresson hot sausage burgers, crawfish grilled cheese sandwiches and jalapeno hush puppies smothered with okra Creole. Boo Koo BBQ serves its menu of burgers, barbecue, nachos and such during lunch Thursday through Monday and dinner nightly.
In other food truck news, tonight, June 25, marks the final installment of the Rolling Through food truck series, which will be held from 5-9 p.m. at the corner of Royal and Press streets in the Bywater.
Tomorrow, June 26, the action moves to Freret Street, when the hot dog hot spot Dat Dog hosts Dat Truck Fest from 4:30-8 p.m. at 5030 Freret St.
And food trucks will be out in full force for a Fourth of July party at the Rusty Nail bar at 1100 Constance St., beginning at 4 p.m. In a riff on all-American barbecue foods, four vendors (Foodie Call, Food Drunk, La Cocinita and NOLA Pie Guy) will compete in a hot dog contest. The party includes DJs, a pie-eating contest, costume contest and rum cocktail competition and a “presidential dunk tank,” offering the chance to dunk your least president.
