As the number of Vietnamese restaurants continues to grow around New Orleans, some are mixing up the typical script for these casual noodle shops.
At one of the newest entries to the field, Pho Bistreaux, this means turning a banh mi into a taco and wrapping fried, crunchy egg rolls inside fresh spring rolls, for a combo called the NOLA roll.
The tacos are found on the restaurant’s list of sliders, but really they look, taste and function like banh mi tacos, with soft flour tortillas wrapped around grilled pork or chicken and the usual dressings of pickled radish, carrots, fresh cilantro, raw jalapenos and a slather of mayo across it all. Another slider option puts the same fillings inside bao, or steamed buns, for a technique that’s becoming increasing common (see further examples at the nearby Ba Chi Canteen and downtown’s new Lucky Rooster).
Pho Bistreaux opened recently near the Uptown universities inside a former bank building that was very briefly the home of Juicy D’s, a purveyor of “guilty-free” steamed burgers.
The Pho Bistreaux menu also includes conventional banh mi and spring rolls, pho and bun noodle salads, along with vegetarian versions of each. The restaurant serves lunch Tuesday through Sunday and dinner Tuesday through Saturday.
