This weekend in New Orleans: Prince party, Creature From the Black Lagoon in 3-D, Gambit Wellness Expo and more

A weekend full of exciting events starts this evening and continues through Sunday night.

Tonight there will be a birthday party for Prince and a screening of Purple Rain, a screening of Creature From the Black Lagoon in 3-D, a bounce show featuring Katey Red, Miss Tee, Rusty Culotta and DJ Rusty Lazer and the play Next to Normal.

Saturday is even more full with the Gambit Wellness Expo, Creole Tomato and Louisiana Cajun Zydeco festivals, several farmers markets and second showings of Purple Rain, Creature From the Black Lagoon and Next to Normal.

Sunday, Niki Walker Salon hosts a hair drive to benefit sick kids, the Louisiana Cajun Zydeco Festival and Next to Normal close out and Creature From the Black Lagoon continues.

Tonight
Prince's birthday party and screening of Purple Rain— DJ Soul Sister is hosting the BYOB event and there will be Prince and Apollonia costume contests. Tickets are $10.50 with discounts for students, children and seniors. Starts at 10 p.m. at the Prytania Theatre.
Creature From the Black Lagoon 3-D screening— A newly restored, 3-D version of the 1954 horror flick will be shown. Tickets are $6.75. 9 p.m. at Chalmette Movies.
Bounce show featuring Katey Red, Miss Tee, Rusty Culotta and DJ Rusty Lazer— The dance party/bounce show/pounch-a-thon is $8 and starts at 10 p.m. at Siberia.
Next to Normal— Leslie Castay plays a suburban mom with mental illness, struggling to deal with her family in this Pulitzer Prize-winning play. $35 general admission. 7:30 p.m. at Southern Rep.

Saturday
Gambit Wellness Expo— There will be free health screenings, S.W.A.G. (Stuff We All Get) and fitness demos and samples of healthy fare at this fun family event. Lakeside Shopping Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Creole Tomato Festival— The one-day festival celebrates the Creole tomato with music, activities and, of course, food. The Creole tomato stickers are a nice touch, too. 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the French Market.
Louisiana Cajun Zydeco Festival— Several big names in zydeco including Rosie Ledet and Chubby Carrier will perform. Also, there's food and crafts, like at the other Jazz and Heritage festivals. 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Old U.S. Mint, about a block away from the Creole Tomato Festival.
Farmers markets— There are farmers markets going on this Saturday all around the city and surrounding areas including St. Bernard Parish, Westwego, Gretna, Covington and Destrehan. Information on all of the markets is linked, which should help with planning.

Sunday
Niki Walker Salon's Cutting for a Cause— Niki Walker Salon is giving complimentary haircuts to people who donate either 10 inches of their hair or $20 to Locks for Love, an organization that makes hairpieces for kids who are losing their hair. There will also be a silent auction. Noon to 4 p.m. at Niki Walker Salon.
