- The lineup for the 2013-14 Broadway in New Orleans series at the Saenger Theatre was announced today at a press conference.
The nine-time Tony Award-winning hit Broadway musical The Book of Mormon
opens the 2013-14 Broadway in New Orleans series at the Saenger Theatre, which is slated to reopen this fall. The Book of Mormon
, which runs Oct. 15-27, begins the season also featuring Ghost the Musical
(Nov. 19-24), Sister Act
(Dec. 17-22), Beauty and the Beast
(Feb. 4-9), Memphis
(March 11-16), War Horse
(May 13-18) and Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles
(Jan. 17-19). The lineup was announced today at a press conference inside the theater, where representatives from the Canal Street Development Corporation (CSDC), the Houston-based theatrical management and development company ACE Theatrical and the City of New Orleans said renovations are on schedule for a fall opening.
Construction on the Canal Street theater, which suffered significant damage following Hurricane Katrina, is scheduled to be completed by late summer, according to CSDC executive director Cynthia Connick. The estimated $52 million renovation includes expanding the stagehouse to accommodate bigger productions and restoring the theater to its original style and color palette.
"We spent hours and hours doing microscopic paint analysis to find what was originally there," said David Anderson, CEO of ACE Theatrical Group.
- The groups managing the renovation aim to restore the theater to its original Italian Renaissance style.
The Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts has hosted the Broadway in New Orleans series while the Saenger has been closed. The Saenger's opening has been pushed back repeatedly, and in 2011 some tax credit issues impeded renovations.
- Renovations are scheduled to be compete by the end of the summer in anticipation for a fall opening.
The completed theater will have a 2,600-seat capacity. Tickets and season packages for the 2013-14 series are now available here.
