This Wednesday evening, March 13, marks the first Vendy Awards street food competition in New Orleans. The event is the local expansion of an annual program started in New York and now held in several cities around the country.
The nonprofit Street Vendor Project asked the public to nominate their favorite street food purveyors, and just about anyone selling street eats outside of a brick-and-mortar location was eligible. The intent, explains program manager Helena Tubis, is “to curate a group of vendors who represent the street vendor culture of the cities where we do these.”

The New Orleans event takes place in the French Market from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Vendors invited to participate vendors will serve their signature items, and a panel of judges will name a winner while attendees will vote on a People’s Choice award. The event is part of the larger Brooklyn Brewery Mash, which takes place all across town from Tuesday through Sunday next week.
Tickets range from $36 at the all-inclusive level (with food samples from all vendors and unlimited Brooklyn Brewery beer) to $6 for basic admission (pay-as-you-go for food and drinks). Admission is free for kids under age six. Find tickets and details here.
The Street Vendor Project is a nonprofit that conducts advocacy work and organizing for street vendors and proceeds from Vendy Awards events supports its work. The New Orleans edition will also serve as a fundraiser for the New Orleans Food Truck Coalition and Slow Food NOLA.
