Get ready New Orleans for a Ryan is coming to town. Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer tweeted at eight o’clock Saturday morning that the Saints had hired former Dallas defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. “It’s done, the New Orleans Saints have hired Rob Ryan as their new defensive coordinator,” Glazer tweeted.

The Time-Picayune minutes later confirmed the report and said that the team will make the announcement official later in the morning and indeed an hour later the team released the statement confirming the hires.

“I’m pleased the opportunity has presented itself for us to be able to add both Rob Ryan and Stan Kwan to our coaching staff,” said Head Coach Sean Payton. “In regards to Rob, we have experience in preparing and playing against his defenses and they’ve always been challenging in terms of the different looks and pressures that they feature. We’ve had the chance to visit with each other and talk about our visions for our team and I’m excited about moving forward as we prepare for the 2013 season.

Rob is enthusiastic about joining our team and getting right to work. Stan is a veteran coach that understands all nuances of the special teams games and will work closely with Greg McMahon. He has a wealth of knowledge and I believe he will be a good fit on our staff.”

This is Ryan's fourth time being a defensive coordinator having led defenses in Cleveland, Oakland and Dallas previously.

“I am excited and thrilled to be joining the New Orleans Saints,” Ryan said. “I have had the opportunity to get to know Sean Payton and his staff a bit better recently and I am excited about joining the team. I have a ton of respect for Mr. Benson, Mickey (Loomis) and the organization and I’m ready to get to work on all facets of the game. This is a great opportunity and we’re getting started right away.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter back on Tuesday reported that the Saints planned on hiring Ryan and despite Payton saying the following day on the networks radio morning show that he planned on interviewing a 2-4 candidates, it was believed to be Ryan’s job to lose.

Thursday Todd Grantham interviewed with the Saints but Friday night withdrew his name from consideration. "I want to thank Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints organization for the opportunity to interview and get to know them," Grantham said in a statement. "They are a first-class organization in every respect. As I said Wednesday, Georgia is a great place, my family loves it here, and I do as well.” Grantham in other words was shown the money by the University and the pot sweetened to stick around with the Bulldogs.

"This is where our heart is and today I have withdrawn my name from consideration for the position with the Saints,” Grantham continued. “I'm excited to start preparations for another season and along with the rest of our defensive staff look forward to coaching some really good returning players as well as developing some very talented newcomers."

Stan Kwan, according to the Picayune report, has also been added to Payton’s staff as the new assistant special teams coach taking the place of Mike Mallory who became the special teams coordinator in Jacksonville after the season.

Ryan spent the past two seasons running the Cowboys defense and in 2011 finished 14th overall after being ranked 23rd in 2010. In 2012, Dallas suffered a number of injuries on defense and gave up 355.4 yards per game.
