Beasts of the Southern Wild, the surprise indie hit by New Orleans filmmaker Benh Zeitlin and his local Court 13 film collective, earned four major Oscar nominations this morning including Best Picture. Zeitlin also earned a Best Director nod, and he and Lucy Alibar were nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. Now nine-year-old star Quvenzhané Wallis received a Best Actress nomination. Wallis is the youngest nominee in the 83-year history of the Academy Awards.
In addition to Beasts, the Best Picture nominees are Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty, Argo, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Silver Linings Playbook, Amour and Django Unchained. Overall, Steven Spielberg's Lincoln earned the most nominations with 12.
