New Orleans City Council District B candidate Dana Kaplan today received official endorsements from no fewer than seven well-known elected officials today: Mayor Mitch Landrieu, Congressman Cedric Richmond, Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman, Rep. Helena Moreno, Rep. Walt Leger, Rep. Jared Brossett and Assessor Errol Williams.
When picking a candidate to endorse, "I always look for a person who is a keen intellect. You have to be smart. And you have to be tough," Landrieu said. "Dana Kaplan is that person."
Kaplan, executive director of the Juvenile Justice Project of Louisiana, entered the race this summer following a "draft" campaign led by District B residents. She eventually received enough petition signatures to avoid paying the $375 qualifying fee to enter the race. Kaplan is running against former chief of staff for Councilwoman Stacy Head Eric Strachan, president of the Broadmoor Improvement Association Latoya Cantrell and Marlon Horton (aka 10th Ward Buck), owner of Finger Lick'n Wings.
The Times-Picayune last week reported that Kaplan is about $10,000 behind Strachan in fundraising for the race.
