The New Orleans Saints Sunday afternoon announced the eight players selected to the team's practice squad. They were defensive end Braylon Broughton, linebacker Ezra Butler, guard Ricky Henry, guard Harland Gunn, tight end Michael Higgins, cornerback Nick Hixson, safety Jerico Nelson and wide receiver Andy Tanner.
Broughton was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2012 draft. At 6-6, 272 pounds Broughton good be a nice project for the future.the TCU product had four tackles and a sack in the preseason.
The injuries suffered at the linebacker position group showed is you can never have enough players there. Butler was a Saints practice squad member back in 2010. This preseason he recorded seven tackles.
Henry is a 6-4, 310 pound former Bears practice squad member, who actually earned his way to the active roster for the final six weeks of the 2011 season.
Gunn was signed by Dallas following the 2012 draft and at their training camp worked at both guard and center.
Higgins' play early on in training camp had many people talking about the possibility making the final 53-man roster. Assistant head coach Joe Vitt mentioned his play early on in camp. Higgins provides the team with insurance considering the concussion history of tight end Dave Thomas. Higgins was on the practice squad team last year for the first three months and eventually made it to the active roster.
Hixson was sighed by the Saints after the 2012 draft and this preseason had two tackles and a pass defense.
Nelson prepped at Destrehan High School and could grow on the practice squad. Nelson had six tackles and a special team stop this preseason.
Tanner was a fan favorite and because of the injuries to other receivers looked like a roster spot could happen. Tanner then got hurt himself suffering an ankle injury. Tanner caught eight passes for 120 yards in the thee games he played this preseason.
