Second line addicts have been holding on the best we can these last few dull, scalding hot months with no street rump shaking to speak of. Well the wait is finally over because this Sunday WE WILL ROLL AGAIN!
The 12th Annual Satchmo SummerFest, which began yesterday, features music, food and partying all weekend long. Traditional jazz, contemporary jazz, brass bands and children's programming are just some of the types of entertainment available (schedule of events here).
(more deets below the jump!)
The last day of the Satchmo SummerFest is Sunday in the Treme beginning with a Jazz Mass at St. Augustine Church (1210 Gov. Nicholls St.). Services begin at 10 a.m. but arrive early because it's always a standing room only event.
Following Mass at 11:30 am is the ‘Satchmo Salute’ Second Line Parade featuring Grand Marshalls Boe Monkey Red and Jennifer Jones; the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club, Million Dollar Baby Dolls, Dumaine Street Gang, Sudan Social Aid and Pleasure Club, the Undefeated Divas, Treme Brass Band, Baby Boyz Brass Band, and TBC Brass Band. The parade will leave the church moving down Governor Nicholls on to Rampart St., Rampart to Esplanade, moving on down to the Old U.S. Mint at Esplanade and Decatur.
Just like it is every year, the day of the parade will be a scorcher so be sure and find reps from the parade sponsors at Rhodes Funeral Home and ask for their wonderful essential church-style fans to help keep cool -- and look cool -- while getting your footwork on.
