When a brass band musician passes in New Orleans, it's customary for fellow musicians to commemorate his life with a musical ceremony each evening leading up to the day he’s laid to rest. The iconic and beloved Uncle Lionel Batiste, who passed last Sunday, has already received several tributes in his honor including a Sunday afternoon tribute at Kermit Ruffins' Speakeasy, a spontaneous second line that same night on Frenchmen, and a second line parade through Treme yesterday.
Here are two more events happening this week. I will be posting up to the minute info as I receive it on my Big Red Cotton FB page and Big Red Cotton Twitter. Additionally, I am posting memorial fund info below for those interested in making a donation to help offset the cost of his homegoing ceremony. Funeral arrangement info soon to come...
Benefits & Tributes
Wednesday, July 11, 9 p.m., Candle Light Lounge 925 N. Robertson St. featuring The Treme Brass Band. (General admission $10, although it could be more to help offset funeral costs)
