An eclectic little café called Foodies (634 Julia St., 586-0534) opened recently in the Warehouse District, and it’s aiming for people after healthier options than your standard po-boys and plate lunches.
Tucked into the landmark “Julia Row” of townhouses, Foodies specializes in build-your-own salads and burritos, fresh juices, sandwiches and a mix of other light items, from black bean hummus to Vietnamese-style rice paper spring rolls and vegetarian pho.
“The idea started as a coffee shop with smoothies and wraps and that sort of thing, and we just added things I’d want to see on a healthy menu,” says John Michael Wade, one of three partners in the project.
There’s no connection between this new Foodies and Foodies Kitchen, the sprawling deli and market opened in Metairie by the Commander’s Palace branch of the Brennan family back in 1999. Foodies Kitchen later expanded with an Uptown location, but both closed years ago and while the Uptown address is now home to Fat Hen Grocery the original Metairie location remains shuttered.
“People have been asking about that left and right as soon as our sign went up,” Wade says. A native of Biloxi who moved here in 2011, he says he wasn’t familiar with the Brennan family’s Foodies ventures.
Look for panini and wraps like Thai chicken salad with lots of ginger and cucumber, breakfast burritos and a kale/citrus/mango smoothie called the “Green Me Up Scotty.”
Foodies serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.
