Southern Rep has announced it will not renew its lease at The Shops at Canal Place at the end of January and will have to find a new space. Spring Awakening opens this weekend and closes Jan. 29. The theater does not expect to have to cancel or disrupt its season, but it is scrambling to look at interim and long term solutions, says managing director Marieke Gaboury.
"With other theaters closed, there being a professional stage available to people is vital," Gaboury says, referencing the loss of Le Chat Noir and the currently closed Le Petit Theatre.
Shows in 2011-2012 season, including Red and God of Carnage, had been selling at 80 to 90 percent, she says.
Southern Rep has occupied its third-floor space at The Shops at Canal Place for 20 years, and Gaboury describes the terms and relationship as favorable. An increase in rates was not unexpected, Gaboury says, because increased traffic and the presence of new stores indicated growth.
"We're in a great place, people are comfortable with it, we have parking," Gaboury says.
The theater is looking for a new home, and one of the benefits may be a more visible presence at a stand alone site, she says.
