It's likely most people know the Pussycat Dolls as the all-girl pop group responsible for a slew of generic radio hits including "Don't Cha" and "Buttons." What many don't know is the musical group originated from a long-running lounge act in Hollywood's the Viper Room and later the Roxy, and during its Hollywood run featured guest appearances from pop bombshells the likes of Christina Aguilera and Gwen Stefani (the most recent iteration of the stage act currently exists at the PCD Burlesque Saloon in Las Vegas). New Orleans might have its local version of the Pussycat Dolls in Bijoux, a newly formed ensemble that features a similar brand of cabaret by way of MTV.

The five members of the group (whose name means "jewels" in French) assume the monikers Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond, Pearl and Emerald, and they'll debut their 45-minute act this Saturday at the Republic. "It's singing, fierce choreography and five beautiful girls wearing fabulous costumes," says group member Shannon Rockweiler, aka Emerald. "It's very high energy." The women in the group have extensive backgrounds in singing, dance and theater; Rockweiler's resume includes a drama degree from University of New Orleans and a stint as a New Orleans Hornets Honeybee.

Saturday's show will feature the group's take on Peggy Lee's "Fever" and other songs, plus a group of holiday numbers like Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" and the sexy Christmas standard "Santa Baby." Also like the original Pussycat Dolls, Bijoux hopes to eventually have a lounge where they can maintain residency. But for now the group plans to just perform at the Republic and other venues through the spring. "Expect to be wowed," Rockweiler says of Saturday's performance. "It'll be 45 kick-ass minutes."

Bijoux performs 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 at Republic. Tickets are $30 at the door or $25 in advance here.
