  • Walter "Wolfman" Washington will rock Fortier Park at a free festival on Thursday.

The Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association (FSJNA) http://www.fsjna.org is hosting the Fortier Festival at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at Alcee Fortier Park (3100 Esplanade Ave.), featuring music by Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Famer Allen Toussaint, R&B-funk-blues master Walter “Wolfman” Washington, painter/jazzman Tony Green and DJ Vic. Admission is free.

The festival also includes food from local restaurants, wine, beer, margaritas and a silent auction of items including two three-day passes to the Voodoo Festival complete with parking and V.I.P. LOA Lounge passes, which FSJNA member Bob McGuire says are worth $1,000.

Proceeds from the festival and auction will be used for upkeep at the park, including keeping the grass mowed, the ponds and fountains clean and the sculptures and other artworks in good shape. The city does not provide any maintenance services, FSJNA member Charlie London says. Those chores fall to volunteers in the neighborhood.

Photographer and Faubourg St. John resident Bobby Wozniak performs horticultural tasks at the park, and has for decades, London says. Another resident, Dean Burridge, maintains the fish pools, mows the grass, pulls weeds, picks up trash and does other maintenance chores. Artworks and fountains in the park have been donated.
