The judges were pissed. The audience booed. And contestants were clearly shocked and upset when Ryan Seacrest announced Pia Toscano was voted off American Idol Thursday. She gracefully held back the tears until after she belted out The Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand By You,” then her sobs were audible as fellow contestants and judges Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler went onstage to give her goodbye hugs and the audience gave her a standing ovation.
After Seacrest announced the vote, the judges were visibly shaken. “I have no idea what just happened her,” Lopez said. “I’m shocked. I’m angry. I don’t even know what to say.” Jackson agreed with her, telling Toscano she was one of the best singers in the contest, and Tyler echoed Lopez's sentiments, chiding voters with, “A mistake is one thing, but a lack of compassion is unforgivable. They’re wrong.”
It was the fifth consecutive woman to be cut from the current season.
So what happened? A blog posted by tammyhudson20 at 3:20 p.m. Thursday on the American Idol site complained that the voting system seemed to be flawed, writing,
“This is the 4th week in a row that I’ve called in to vote for my favorite contestant and I press redial to vote for the same person again and it says thanks for voting for another contestants #. Now I know what # I dialed because it was the right person the first time, but after about 3 or 4 redials, it enters a vote for different person. I don't know if anyone else has had this problem, but I really don't like or appreciate it. I hope it's a glitch that will soon go away.”
Of course it could be user error (though she said she did hit "redial." Has anyone else had the same problem?
