Gambit has requested comment on the from both City Council president Arnie Fielkow and District C councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer.
Through a representative, Palmer has issued this statement about the new crackdown on noise curfews and last night's videotaped shutdown of the To Be Continued Brass Band at their regular corner of Bourbon and Canal streets, which is within Palmer's district:
I am aware of the noise ordinance and enforcement issues. My office is in the process of reviewing many of the quality of life issues affecting the residents of the French Quarter that have been brought forth by multiple representatives in the community. As it stands, the ordinance states that it is unlawful for persons to play musical instruments on public rights-of-way between the hours of 8:00pm 9:00am in Sec 66-205 of the New Orleans Municipal Code of Ordinances. I feel that this should be fairly enforced citywide. Also, there is a current process that affords temporary permits in Sec 66-138, 66-139 and specifications to the noise allowance in 66-176 of the code as well.
