TONIGHT: Ted Leo, Screaming Females

(Check the Ted Leo & the Pharmacists preview in this week's Gambit.)

As one third of the touring support for the veteran Ted Leo, Screaming Females' guitarist and vocalist Marissa Paternoster — all moptop-and-bangs, playing like a J. Mascis miniature — wails uncontrollably on her Fender Stratocaster, the band's fuzzy hooks and giant riffs provider. The New Brunswick, New Jersey power-trio, still proudly representing DIY and punk rock basement shows, owes its sound to '60s psychedelic garage groups and '90s alt-rock worship in bands like Dinosaur Jr. Paternoster's fingerwork is all over 2009's Power Move (Don Giovanni), the band's third release.

The Jersey band is no stranger to New Orleans, having ripped apart venues like the Zeitgeist Multi-Disciplinary Arts Center and the Big Top, or more recently, inside Hey! Cafe, trading shred worthiness with JEFF the Brotherhood. The band opens One Eyed Jacks tonight at 10 p.m. Tickets $16. (Warning: Lots of flashing colors in the video below.)
