It's pretty clear Jennifer Weishaupt is a booster for her Mid-City neighborhood. She's president of the local neighborhood association, after all, and she and her husband Erich have become a one-household neighborhood revitalization engine, completing a series of beautiful renovations of once-derelict buildings in the blocks around their own home. And then there's the Ruby Slipper, the colorful breakfast/lunch spot they opened last year in a formerly blighted corner store.
Weishaupt's enthusiasm for Mid-City was persuasive enough to earn the neighborhood a free ice cream social, which will be held today, Sept. 7, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Ruby Slipper (139 South Cortez St.).
The free party is the prize from the Edy's SlowChurned Neighborhood Salute online essay contest. Edy's, the Oakland, Calif.-based ice cream maker, invited people around the country to submit essays making the case for why their neighborhoods deserve ice cream parties, and Weishaupt's entry was one of the winners.
The Ruby Slipper is normally closed on Mondays, but the Weishaupts will be there today between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. dishing out free ice cream to the first 100 people who show up.
