Lakeview Regional Medical Center (95 E. Fairway Drive, Covington) has designed a health fair aimed at making it fun for children and their families to learn about kids health issues, healthy snacks and even get the immunizations they need.
The fair is from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 18, and includes an assortment of health-related vendors who can provide health screenings for youngsters and information for parents. Lakeviews Rehab Department will discuss backpack safety, State Police Troop L will cover bicycle and car-seat safety, and Lakeview dietitians will talk about healthy school lunches and snacks.
To receive free immunizations, parents must provide records of the shots their kids have already received. Its a good time to get the meningitis vaccination, which is required by schools this year for the first time for children 11 and older. Health officials also recommend youngsters receive chicken pox immunizations at age 4.
While parents are gathering information from health professionals at the fair, children can participate in crafts, play inflatable games, take train rides and enjoy free refreshments. At 11 a.m. they will have a chance to meet New Orleans Hornets mascot Hugo as well as members of the Hornets Stingers Girls Dance Team.
Door prizes will be awarded, including a New Orleans Hornets Team Prize Pack and other gifts for children.
Those who attend the event are asked to support the Mandeville Head Start Center by donating school supplies: a box of crayons (24 or larger), construction paper, a 7-oz. bottle of school glue, a three-pack of glue sticks or a package of eight washable markers.
