Reading this week's cover story by the Gambit Weekly's Sarah Andert called "Beyond Organic," an examination of the levels of value in locally-produced food had me craving the fresh tastes and undeniable terroir of Louisiana produce. So did reading chef Anne Churchill's menu for her latest "locavore" dinner planned this Thursday at St. James Cheese Co.
You would have to be lactose intolerant to dislike St. James Cheese Co., which has easily become the best, most ambitious cheese shop in the region since opening in 2006. They go way beyond cheese however. Lately, they have been hosting guest chefs on periodic Thursday nights for casual dinners in their courtyard and small indoor dining area. This week, Churchill is serving a menu built on the principle of sourcing ingredients from local suppliers wherever possible.
The dinner costs $50 and BYOB is encouraged. Helpfully, the Wine Seller is located right next door. Call St. James at 899-4737 to reserve a spot.
Chef Greg Sonnier -- formerly (pre-Katrina) of Gabrielle, formerly (post-Katrina) of the Windsor Court's New Orleans Grill Room -- will conduct his own dinners at St. James on July 31 and Aug. 14. Anne Churchill returns for another dinner at St. James on Aug. 21.
