The sound walls along Interstate 10 were built to reduce traffic noises for the residential neighborhoods adjacent to the highway. The walls that stretch from Causeway Boulevard to the Interstate 10/610 split have been there for 12 years.
Since 2011, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and the Federal Highway Administration have been working on a $42 million project to widen the interstate for 1.2 miles between the Veterans Memorial Boulevard and Clearview Parkway exits. The width of this section has been expanded from six to 10 lanes to better accommodate the nearly 162,000 commuters who travel through it each day. Part of the project includes building sound walls along that stretch of Interstate 10. The new walls should be completed in the next four to six weeks.
