Cardboard Wings, Cliff Usher and Lindsay Pitts' debut as Birdlips, doesn't sound like a bargain-bin effort. Far from it — recording for peanuts ($10,000) with help from the Nelson County, Va., studio Monkeyclaus, the Charlottesville duo somehow managed to pack crisp banjos, blankets of guitar, chirping flutes and a church Mass organ on the record, all for about the price of two "Cash for Clunkers" rebates. Hovering above those complex arrangements, however, are the album's two bare-bones top draws: marvelously layered male/female harmonies underpinning strummed, psychedelic, nature-inspired melodies, at times summoning Iron & Wine's intimate bedroom blues ("Tire Chains"), at others stretching out for expansive, whistled anthems a la a baritone Andrew Bird ("Blades of Grass").
