Benny Grunch & The Bunch

comment
For those who only had their Grunch appetite whetted by the constant radio play of The 12 Y'Ats of Christmas over the past few weeks, Santa brought this Twelfth Night gift of Benny and his trusty Bunch live and in person. The wacky Chalmatian's parody songs like "Norris The Nocturnal Nutria" and "O Little Town Of Destrehan" put a special (and deranged) New Orleans flavor into the holiday stew. "Ain't There No More," his goofball rap litany of Crescent City landmark businesses gone with the wind, set to the tune of "Jingle Bells," was a nostalgic local classic even before, suddenly, a lot more things weren't there no more. Grunch's songs are as obnoxious as a Christmas sweater with appliquŽd trees and as New Orleans as a crawfish boil outside the FEMA trailer. Having him back to razz and celebrate our native cultcha is one more sign we're getting back to our own skewed version of normal. Tickets $10. -- Alison Fensterstock
