To mark Father's Day and raise funds for a new culinary library, the Link Restaurant Group and the Southern Food and Beverage Museum (SoFAB) host Beasts and Books on June 16 in Central City, near the museum's future home. Described as a combination indoor picnic and culinary book fair, the event will fill the Ashe Cultural Arts Center (1712 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd., 504-569-9070; www.ashecac.org) with food booths from local restaurants and bins of new and used culinary books for sale from a wide range of local stores and organizations.
Chef Donald Link's restaurants Cochon, Herbsaint and recently opened Peche Seafood Grill will serve food, along with Boucherie, Cafe Reconcile, Cowbell, Parkway Bakery & Tavern, Pizza Delicious, local caterer Linda Green (aka "The Yakamein Lady") and others. There will be drinks, live music, performances from parade dance groups, a bake sale and children's activities.
SoFAB plans to open the library later this year at 1609 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. in partnership with the New Orleans Public Library.
Beasts and Books is scheduled from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. All-inclusive tickets cost $50 ($10 for children age 10 and under) and include a picnic lunch from Cochon, drinks and samples of food from the vendors. General admission is $5 and guests can buy individual items from vendors. Tickets are available at www.southernfood.org and at the door.
