A swan swimming in the clouds, a curtain of candy wrappers, a classic Red Grooms (pictured) pool hall interior and a giant eyeball sculpture are among the vibrantly varied works highlighting this eclectic selection from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation. A former New Orleanian, Weisman was an entrepreneur, philanthropist and big-time collector who regarded fantasy and illusion as the beginnings of artistic creativity as well as sources for magical transformation. Curated by foundation director Billie Milam Weisman, the show features more than 125 works inspired by contemporary life, including architecture, cartoons, design, electronics, fashion, food, graffiti, nature and technology, collectively underscoring how artists use fantasy and illusion to create new modes of representing the world, taking us beyond our own realities into the realm of amazement. -- D.
