Apologies to Ohio, but "family" is the operative word in Akron/Family's bifurcated handle. The Brooklyn folk/rock band lost frontman Ryan Vanderhoof to a Buddhist calling in 2007, so now there is no frontman; all three remaining members contribute vocals where needed. After signing to Michael Gira's Young God Records in 2003, the group embarked on a tour with Gira's Angels of Light — or, more accurately, as his Angels of Light, playing behind the singer/guitarist as one large ensemble. The theme continues today in gigs that abandon traditional opener/headliner orientation for a communal experience built from hybridized bands and sounds. It's an extension of the approach taken on A/F albums, which clatter schizophrenically between crashing psychedelic rock, environmental found sounds, whispered acoustic folk and electronic twittering, often on the same song. Released in May, Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free (Dead Oceans) is the latest. Warpaint, a haunting, wafting female foursome from Los Angeles, opens (and may be headlining as well). Tickets $10 advance purchase, $12 day of show. — Noah Bonaparte Pais
