Thursday, Sept. 6, marks the grand opening of Cobalt (333 St. Charles Ave., 565-5595), Chef Susan Spicer and the Kimpton Group's adventuresome CBD restaurant. Spicer will work as the new restaurant's consulting chef while Executive Chef Brack May steers the Cobalt kitchen. Featuring regional American cuisine, the menu includes dishes like Louisiana oyster pan roast, five-spice duck with scallion pancakes, and a grilled pork chop with hominy, red beans and New Mexico chile peppers.


Savvy Classes

The Savvy Gourmet School of Cooking has released a jam-packed fall schedule that will expand further in the coming months. The school evolved from an informal group of friends who were disappointed at the dearth of culinary instruction in the city. Now, the school's founder and full-time psychologist Aaron Wolfson has his hands in more pots than he anticipated: Wolfson and Chef Dan Esses (formerly of Peristyle) rent space for intermittent classes at Rosy's Jazz Hall (500 Valence St.); the Jefferson Parish Parks and Recreation Department has chosen Savvy Gourmet to coordinate its fall cooking classes to be held at Mike Miley Playground; Savvy Gourmet and Le Meridien Hotel are offering monthly wine and cheese soirees at Midi South of France (614 Canal St., 527-6712); lastly, on Friday, Sept. 14, the cooking school and Single Gourmet will merge for a singles-only evening of food instruction by former Bayona Chef de Cuisine Corbin Evans, a buffet courtesy Rosy's Jazz Hall Chef Steve Zweibaum and heavy-duty boogying. Market Watch

Somewhere between the Conarty's muscadine sneaux cones and Mark Babcock's stunning array of chile peppers, you might have caught a whiff of lavender recently at the Crescent City Farmers Market. David-Michael Goddard sells large bouquets and smaller lavender posies bundled with ribbon. If you find him early, he might even have a plant uprooted from his Mid-City garden. On Saturday, Sept. 1, catch the New Orleans Fire Department's firefighter and house chef, Mike Gowland, discussing fire safety while preparing his specialty: barbecue. At this annual event, kids may fulfill their own fantasies crawling around Gowland's shiny red fire truck. The Tuesday market is located at 200 Broadway St. and runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Saturday market is located at 700 Magazine St. and runs from 8 a.m. to noon.
