This wine is an excellent example of a well-crafted, balanced Super Tuscan. Grapes for this wine were partially sourced from vineyards in the distinguished Bolgheri Designation of Origin on Tuscany's Tyrrhenian coast. Super Tuscan wines are usually blends of a clone of Tuscany's premier grape, sangiovese, and French Bordeaux or Rhone varietals. This Bordeaux-inspired wine is composed of 60 percent merlot, 35 percent cabernet sauvignon and 5 percent cabernet Franc, and it's aged for one year in French oak barriques. In the glass, the wine offers heady aromas of dried dark fruits and hints of tobacco, leather and cedar. On the palate, taste intense yet smooth flavors of black cherry and black currants, brambly notes, dusty cocoa, sweet spices and firm tannins. Decant 45 minutes before serving to aerate the wine. Drink it with grilled steak, herb-crusted rack of lamb, osso buco, pork loin, veal, fowl, eggplant, pasta and tomato-based dishes. Buy it at: Martin Wine Cellars in Uptown and Metairie, Faubourg Wines and Dorignac's.
