2008 Neil Ellis Sauvignon Blanc

Groenekloof, South Africa

Neil Ellis, a highly respected winemaker noted for selecting fruit from little-known areas, made this flawless Sauvignon Blanc with grapes sourced from Groenekloof on South Africa's west coast. A 2003 Wine Spectator Top 100 wine, the current vintage is an excellent bargain and a refreshing summer offering. Very well balanced, clean and zingy, the wine shows subtle yet complex aromas of lemon and grapefruit and an intriguing flintiness. In the mouth, marvelous bright flavors of guava, white peach, lime, lemongrass, an engaging minerality and pleasant herbaceous character are rounded out with perfect acidity and a long finish. Drink now and over the next couple of years. Enjoy with oysters, calamari, crabmeat, fish, scallops, smoked seafood, chicken, pork, salads with vinaigrette, chevre and brie cheeses. Where to buy it: Martin Wine Cellar (Uptown and Metairie). Where to drink it: Martinique (Listings current at press time.) — Brenda Maitland
