2008 Layer Cake Shiraz

South Australia / $13-$16 Retail

Layer Cake is winning over wine critics and enthusiasts with terrific structure and layered flavors at a bargain price. Grapes were primarily sourced from McLaren Vale, one of South Australia's best sub-regions for growing Shiraz. In the glass, the dense, fruit-forward complex wine offers concentrated aromas of ripe black fruit, pepper, roasted coffee, licorice and tobacco notes. On the palate, savor black cherries, currants, blackberries, chocolate, exotic spices, pleasant minerality and lush tannins. Decant for best results. Drink it with grilled meats, roast chicken and pork. Buy it at: Swirl Wines, Dorignac's, Acquistapace's Super Market and Fresh Market in Mandeville. Drink it at: Muriel's. — Brenda Maitland
