Priorat, Spain / $12-$18 Retail

This remarkable bottling from the heart of Priorat, southwest of Barcelona, reflects the region's harsh growing conditions. The dry climate and rocky hillsides make it difficult for the vines to reach moisture, but that yields a concentrated, complex wine. A blend of half Cariñena (Carignan) and half Garnacha (Grenache), the medium-bodied wine exudes aromas of dark fruit, black tea, earthy notes and a stony character. On the palate, intense flavors of blackberry, plum, red and black cherries, dried herbs, touches of pepper and spice and firm, smooth tannins lead to a lingering finish. Decant an hour before drinking. Drink it with rare steak, roast beef, veal, game, hearty stews and firm cheeses. Buy it at: Whole Foods Market in Metairie, Dorignac's and Martin Wine Cellars. Drink it at: MiLa. — Brenda Maitland
