2007 Fontanafredda Briccotondo Barbera

Piedmont, Italy / $13-$14 Retail

Grapes from estate-owned hillside vineyards in both Piedmont's Alba and Asti regions were sourced for this lovely wine, a great buy for less than $15. Made from 100 percent Barbera grapes, this medium-bodied wine is one of Wine Spectator's Top 100 wines of 2007. This vintage exhibits enticing dark fruit aromas and floral scents with a touch of pepper and light spice. On the palate, soft waves of juicy, fresh fruit reminiscent of black cherries, plums and blackberries lead into a succulent finish with good acidity and beautifully rounded tannins. Drink it now and over the next two to five years. It's an excellent food wine and matches well with a variety of dishes such as sausages, braised meats, risotto, pasta, savory casseroles and hearty cheeses. Where to buy it: Swirl and Rouses in Uptown. Where to drink it: Emeril's and Herbsaint.(Listings current at press time.) — Brenda Maitland
