2006 La Mozza I Perazzi Morellino di Scansano

For the past decade, Italy's Maremma region — stretching along the southern Tuscan coast and surrounding the town of Scansano — has attracted some of the country's top winemakers. This bottling, a Mario Batali/Joe Bastianich joint effort, showcases the round, soft, juicy character of the primary varietal, a close cousin of Sangiovese called Morellino. Light- to medium-bodied, the wine features dense flavors of tart cherry, blackberry, hints of cocoa and spice, supple tannins and good acidity. Decant an hour before serving. Drink it with Parmigiano-Reggiano, prosciutto, grilled meats, pasta dishes, pizza or roasted chicken. Buy it at: Swirl Wines and the Wine Seller.
